Families FAQs

  • How should we dress for our photo?

Every person has an individual taste in clothing, and that is what makes you an individual. Yet when working with a group, it is essential to coordinate color tones and styles, from head to toe, for a more pleasing visual effect. This is true for any type of family sitting (formal, informal, or on-location).

When preparing for your family portrait, we suggest you place the clothing articles together side-by-side to get an idea of how they will appear in your portrait. If you notice one clothing article stands out in contrast with the others, you will also see it in your finished picture.

It is important to choose clothing that fits well and doesn’t distract from the subjects. Clothing should be clean and wrinkle free, as untidy clothing will show clearly in a photograph. Try to avoid sleeveless tops, tweeds, shiny material, and busy prints when possible.

  • What colors photograph the best?

The key to remember in creating a professional portrait is that the face of the subjects is the most important focal point, not the clothing styles or the color tones. However, when color tones are blended correctly, they can add a sense of warmth and depth to a portrait, setting the mood.

If you should choose to plan your family portrait indoors on a High-Key background, your family should consider choosing lighter color tones, such as whites or pastels.

Outdoor environmental portrait sessions are photographed using natural light. Natural lighting works best when the subjects are dressed in earth tones (greens, tans, beige, browns), as well as shades of a variety of medium colors. Please consider staying away from whites and light pastels for outdoor sessions. If you have any questions regarding color coordinating, please call our portrait consultant.

  • We have three families being photographed together for the grandparents. Can we also have each family done separately?

Yes. Please let us know if you wish to have separate groups photographed during your consultation. This will allow us to tailor the photo session to your needs and set time aside for the creation of each group portrait.

  • Will our full outfit show in the portrait?

It is best that everyone in the portrait is dressed from "head-to-toe" in the clothing style of your choice. Doing this allows our photographer more options in the arrangement of your group.

The composition of your group will depend on the number of people in the portrait, their various heights, and the colors they are wearing.

Children

Children FAQs

  • What age is the best age for my child's first portrait?

We see many babies come into our studio as infants with their proud parents for their very first Family Portrait.

At the age of three months, we catch some great smiles, as you can see!

At this age, every day, you see something new and exciting developing.

By six months, babies are sitting. By eight months, some are beginning to stand, and some are taking their very first steps. These are good ages for us to capture those great expressions as they are so responsive and natural.

Nine months to a year is when they start wanting to move and explore their world. What a joyous time! This certainly is an age you will want to capture and remember. We photograph a number of our client's children three to four times during their first year.

  • When is the best time of day to photograph a child?

Children respond best when they are well-rested. It is generally best to schedule a baby or small child's appointment after their feeding and nap times.

  • Can I have my child photographed with a special toy?

Yes. We welcome props that are meaningful to your child. Our portrait consultant will be happy to discuss all prop options with you.

  • Can I have my photograph taken with my child?

Yes. A beautiful portrait of you and your child will not only be meaningul to you today, but your child will cherish it in the years ahead.

  • What clothing styles and colors photograph the best?

Generally speaking, it is important that the clothes you put on the child fit well. Clothes that are too large for the child are distracting and take your eye away from the beauty of the portrait and your child's delicate expression.

When photographing infants and young children our photographers takes note as to what color your child is wearing and selects the perfect backdrop to enhance the effect of the portrait.

Inside, our studio is fully equipped with beautiful backdrops to accommodate your child's portrait session. When working with children inside, we have noticed that white and pastel colors photograph best before light backgrounds, and medium to dark colors photograph best with darker backdrops. When the photo session takes place outdoors, earth tones such as green, brown, blue, maroon, or tan enhance the portrait immensely.

When the session is taken at your home or on location, you have a number of different options.

At the time of your portrait consultation, we will discuss various color options and show you samples of the various background options and samples of colors preparation suggestions.

  • Can I have my children photographed together?

Yes. When photographing your children in a group portrait, it is wise to coordinate the color of the children's clothing.

  • Is retouching available?

Yes. Mark Lawrence Photographers has a staff of excellent photo artists.

  • How much time in advance must I call to get an appointment?

Most times of the year, we generally can schedule an appointment for a consultation within a week. During the summer months, it tends to be a week or two.
