What type of pose will my school allow in the yearbook?

Most schools (with some exceptions), allow an indoor or an outdoor portrait in the yearbook. A yearbook photograph is rather small, so we strongly suggest you select a head and shoulder pose for your yearbook choice.

What should I wear for my Senior Portrait?

Generally most seniors wear something dressy for their indoor studio poses, and something more casual for their outdoor environmental poses. When choosing attire for your senior portrait, please keep in mind, simplicity is beauty! Fads in fashion change year to year, as well as tend to date a portrait. A simple basic clothing style will not only compliment and enhance your portrait, it will give your portrait lasting power. Your face and expression is the main focal point of your senior portrait. Your clothing enhances the look of your portrait, but should not pull the eye away or distract, when the portrait is viewed.

What colors photograph the best?

Generally speaking we suggest wearing medium to dark tones. Avoid stripes, plaids, busy patterns, and shiny fabric. Whites or pastels photograph well against white backgrounds. Earth tones (such as greens, browns and blues), photograph well both indoors and outdoors. Below are samples of good clothing color choices, against various backgrounds and outdoor settings.

What about my hair?

Wear a hair style that looks good on you. If you should dramatically change your hairstyle for your senior portrait session, chances are you will not be happy with the results.

Washing your hair, prior to your session, may cause your hair to appear fly away. We suggest using a little moose, or hair spray, to keep it in place. If your hair is long, parted in the middle, or tends to cover your face, please consider pushing your hair back a bit, to enable adequate lighting, to illuminate all areas of the face, and not cause shadows.

I wear glasses - shall I wear them when I have my portrait taken?

Yes. However if you wear a heavy prescription, please consider talking with your optician, to borrow an empty matching frame, or remove the lenses from the frames. Another possibility is to have our photographer take one pose of you without the glasses, which will help us remove any glare that appears in your senior photos.

Could you give me an examples of what I shouldn't wear and other pointers I should know?

D I S T R A C T E R S

Sleeveless Shirts or Blouses - Avoid wearing this type of clothing as your arms will appear heavier in a photograph.

Tight Clothing - Tend to gap, pull and tug especially around the buttons.

Tweeds - Cause moire patterns in a photograph, causing your clothing to appear out of focus and discolored.

Clothing made from sheer material - The camera captures things that shouldn't be seen!

Glitter on clothing or make-up - Often appears as dirt marks or lint spots.

Stripes, Plaids, Patterns, Printing and Shiny Material - Tend to take away from the subject's face.

White and very pale pastels - Tend to drown or wash out natural facial tones.

Wrinkles, Stains, Missing Buttons or Torn Clothing - Any of these factors will show in your photograph. Always check clothing before your session.

Sunburns, Deep Tans or Dark Heavy Foundation - Tend to make the skin appear much darker than it is in a photograph.

Short sleeve shirts - Tend to add weight to the subject. It will draw the attention to the arms, taking the focal point off your face.
